The Seven Themes of Art – Robert Priseman

The Seven Themes of Art

Our first talk in 2026 is at 7.30pm on Wednesday 28th January 2026 at Euclid Street and we are delighted to welcome Robert Priseman.

Historically, we have tended to view art as existing in a linear narrative. Recalling how art movements such as the Renaissance gave way to Mannerism or Neoclassicism yielded to Romanticism. This approach has helped us gain fundamental insights into how commissioning bodies like the church and Arts Council have shaped art’s production in the past.

While understanding these influences is highly informative, it does not paint the whole picture. As art also speaks to us at a deeper, more profound level. It helps us connect to those things which unite us all: be it the desire to love and be loved, to grieve those we have lost, or gaze in wonder at the world around us.
