The Living Landscape
On Thurs 26th November we welcome Tim Baynes who will talk to us on The Living Landscape
In this talk local artist, Tim Baynes, takes the subject of a landscape painting and examines this genre through the lens of seventeen painters.
We can also see his own approach to the exciting places on our Wiltshire doorstep and how they can inform a painter.
The evening’s focus: examining the work of modern and contemporary landscape painters, including several in Swindon’s remarkable collection of 20th century art. They are:
- Frank Auerbach
- Ivon Hitchens
- Paul Nash
- Ben Nicholson
- John Piper and Graham Sutherland
The Living Landscape – a talk by Tim Baynes
Tim will present work from these painters who have inspired him and why. He’ll examine the significance of each painter’s approach to landscape painting. For each artist Tim will examine the significance of each painter’s approach to landscape painting. For example: the painter who took the English landscape, loosened its tie, and the painter whose landscapes feel ‘built’ rather than painted. There’ll be an opportunity to understand Tim’s inspiration and process, to browse the sketchbooks and preparatory drawings and materials which he will bring along to the talk.
In the Q&A there’ll be an opportunity for people to bring their own ideas and experiences on landscape.

When and where
Our talks take place in the council chamber in Swindon’s civic offices on Euclid Street. Doors open at 7pm.
£8 for members and £10 for non-members. As with all our talks you can pay at the door. In cash or via credit card.
