Sandham Memorial Chapel: Heather Walkling: Heather Walkling – Thursday 30th July
This illustrated presentation by Heather Walkling introduces Sir Stanley Spencer, the British artist known for his personal and imaginative approach to painting. His chapel works, created in he 1920s, focus on everyday activities rather than scenes of battle.
We will explore how his experiences in the First World War—as a medical orderly at Beaufort Military Hospital in Bristol and later while serving in Salonika (modern-day North Macedonia)—shaped his subject matter.
This engaging and thought-provoking talk highlights the importance of everyday moments and human connection.

Shortly after leaving the Slade School of Art, Spencer became well known for his paintings depicting Biblical scenes occurring as if in Cookham, Berkshire, the small village beside the River Thames where he was born and spent much of his life.

Our talks take place in the council chamber in Swindon’s civic offices on Euclid Street. Doors open at 7pm.
£8 for members and £10 for non-members. As with all our talks you can pay at the door. In cash or via credit card.
