Out of the Calabash – Winston Branch.
On the 29th February 2024 the Friends will welcome Winston Branch to Zoom. Winston will present to us a talk entitled Out of the Calabash. In it he’ll explore the journey of two worlds emerging. The world which welcomed the infant Winston and the world that formed him.

About the artist
Wikipedia tells us that: The 1947 born British artist, Winston Branch, hails from Saint Lucia – a sovereign island in the Caribbean sea. A place where he maintains a hone still – along with a studio in California.
August bodies that have works by Branch in their collections include Tate Britain, the Legion of Honor De Young Museum in San Francisco, California, and the St Louis Museum of Art in Missouri.
In 1978, Branch received a Guggenheim Fellowship.
He’s also received the British Prix de Rome, a DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) Fellowship to Berlin, a sponsorship to Belize from the Organization of American States. Hee’s also served as an Artist in Residence at Fisk University in Tennessee.
Further, Branch has served as a professor of fine arts. He’s also taught art at several art institutions in both London and the US. And he’s worked as a theatrical set designer with various theatre groups..
As described by art critic Carlos Diaz Sosa, Branch paints “abstract canvases in cool, cloudy colours that have a quality which allow the viewer to explore the depths of the mind. Branch uses paint like a symbol, a purely aesthetic language, an illustration of spirit.”
