Eric Ravilious and Friends: an introduction – a talk by Philip Garahan on Thursday 25th June
This illustrated talk will focus on the first official war Artist to die in WW2. Although his life was cut short, he made a significant contribution together with a group of other artists. While many challenging trends in the visual arts were under way, these artists sustained a traditional style especially in relation to landscape painting.

Eric William Ravilious (22 July 1903 – 2 September 1942) was a British painter, designer, book illustrator and wood-engraver.
He grew up in Sussex and became well-known for his watercolours of the South Downs, Castle Hedingham and other English landscapes. The works examine English landscape and vernacular art with an off-kilter, modernist sensibility and clarity.
Ravilious served as a war artist. He became the first British war artist to die on active service in World War II when the aircraft he was in was lost off Iceland.
